Vitamin A and hair loss.Do not exceed your daily recommended dosage


It is unbelievable that vitamin A and hair loss are related. As a result of which diet programs which are designed or administered under the direction of a physician with prescribed meals, dietary supplements and vitamin ingestion have become popular. Most of the time the client is told that vitamins are a necessary part of the program to prevent hair loss associated with dieting. According to dermatologists point of view, the vitamins cannot prevent hair loss associated with rapid, significant weight loss. Moreover, many of these supplements are high in vitamin A which can magnify the hair loss.

Hair loss can be caused by very high doses of vitamin A in supplements and certain retinoid (vitamin-A-derived) drugs, says Jane Higdon of the Linus Pauling Institute, author of the excellent book An Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals. Toxicity from vitamin A, by the way, is caused by the ingestion of 50,000 IU or more of vitamin A daily for an extended period of time.

Vitamin A hair loss and your nutrition

The vitamin A that you get in cereals and even in supplements can be toxic in large amounts. Being given that this vitamin is not water soluble it tends to be stored in the body. Many studies have shown that an overabundance of vitamin A in the diet can cause hair loss.

We actually gets vitamin A in two ways: from plant sources in the form of carotenoids, such as beta carotene, that convert to vitamin A in the body. These sources include yellow and red orange fruits and vegetables and as well as some dark green leafy vegetables. We also get vitamin A from animal sources in the form of retinol. Some good animal sources include:

  • liver
  • fish oil
  • eggs
  • fortified milk rich in calcium
  • other foods that are rich in vitamin A

    Carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body but only when needed. Carotene is in carrots, broccoli, spinach, and green leafy vegetables. Don't worry about consuming too many of these great foods that are rich in phytochemicals essential to your health.

    Now that you are aware that an excess of vitamin A can lead to hair loss you must go easy on it as It can prove harmful when taken in excess.
